Gravity waves from the Hunga Tonga eruption

Three geostationary weather satellites watch the January 2022 eruption of Hunga Tonga–Hunga Haʻapai push rings of atmospheric gravity waves outward across the Pacific. Brightness-temperature difference imagery, 15 frames per second.

What to look for

Look past the volcano to the rings spreading out from it. Each ring is a pressure wave in the atmosphere, and it passes from one satellite's view into the next. The film lasts a few seconds, so play it on a loop.
